Major Puerto Rican organization is backing Julie Gonzales in Colorado U.S. Senate election.

May 27, 2026 | DENVER, CO - Boricuas Unidos en la Diáspora (BUDPR), a leading organization of Puerto Ricans in the United States, today announced their endorsement of Colorado State Senator Julie Gonzales in the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate in Colorado, citing Sen. Gonzales’ support for Puerto Rican sovereignty and her commitment to support decolonization and independence in the U.S. Congress.

"As a Chicana leader who is deeply committed to self-determination, decolonization, and sovereignty for oppressed peoples, I'm proud to stand with Puerto Ricans in the archipelago and in the diaspora to fight for liberation,” said Sen. Gonzales. “I’m honored to have the endorsement of Boricuas Unidos en la Diáspora, which has a strong presence in Colorado and across the country, and I look forward to being a voice for the Puerto Rican people in the U.S. Senate."

Senator Julie Gonzales is a bold progressive leader who has served in the Colorado General Assembly since 2019. She has been a major champion on issues like education, healthcare, and the rights of working people, and she is a staunch advocate for self-determination. There are more than 35,000 Puerto Ricans in Colorado who can have a major impact on Sen. Gonzales’ challenge for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate.

“Julie Gonzales is the kind of leader Puerto Ricans need in Congress: a courageous ally who is unafraid to say that 128 years of U.S. rule is enough and that it is time to free Puerto Rico of colonialism,” said BUDPR President and Colorado resident Alberto Medina. “We are proud to endorse her and we encourage all Puerto Ricans in Colorado, and everyone who believes in justice and freedom, to support her campaign.”

Throughout the 2026 election cycle, BUDPR is connecting with federal lawmakers and candidates to secure their support for Puerto Rican sovereignty. Julie Gonzales is BUDPR’s first U.S. Senate endorsement of the 2026 election.

“The United States Senate is a key battleground in the struggle for Puerto Rico’s decolonization. For too long, the Senate has ignored the issue entirely, which has perpetuated the archipelago’s colonial status,” said Medina. “We look forward to having a champion like Julie Gonzales in the U.S. Senate who will fight for the self-determination and sovereignty of the Puerto Rican people.”
